Co-Space

The Media Development Authority’s (MDA) Interactive & Digital Media Programme Office will be devoting much efforts towards developing Co-Space, said Mr Michael Yap, the office’s executive director.

Co-Space, or co-existing space, combines a real, physical space with a virtual-reality space on a computer. It will allow a person to experience or interact with a virtual reality that is based on a real-life space.

One of the first such “spaces” to be proposed is the virtual Youth Olympic Games (YOG) stadium.

The plan is to install hundreds of video cameras, sound recording devices, and sensors in the real stadium to capture the atmosphere, the sounds, the cheers, and the actions from every possible angle. With the information collected, a virtual stadium that replicates the sight and sound of the YOG can be created for the virtual viewer.

Co-Space has also aroused the interest of the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), which is planning to use the technology to improve the army’s combat and strategic abilities.

The potential commercial benefits of Co-Space is so huge that the Interactive & Digital Media Programme Office has registered “Co-Space” as a trademark.
