Background
FutureWorlds is a strategic initiative by the MDA that explores the very summit of digital technology which involves virtual realities, 3D multisensory simulations and realistic immersive digital environments which will enhance communications and the real-time sharing of data and information. Through this MDA seeks to support new technologies, platforms and applications which will see the creation of new business models value creation through the innovative coupling of real-time virtual and physical happenings involving new types of location based, HCI, social networking and simulation media and using the Internet as a backbone. The scope of Future Worlds envisions innovative ways to connect people, transmit data and share information, socialize, advertise, distribute and commercialize products and services, and to monetize through the various future world platforms themselves. Project submissions may include but do not have to be limited by:

  • “Viral-ising” social network platforms through the use of 3D models, avatars, location based services, sensors, outdoor media, and other Human Computer Interfaces to create immersive environments where people can interact with the virtual and physical environment in real-time, share information and data, engage in buying and selling and play online games and media.
  • Creating realistic simulations that combine visualisation systems with real-time feedback, processing and analysis to help in the areas such as Disaster Management, Healthcare, Defense as well as general employee training and other corporate needs. Propossals for implementation within these sub-sectors should articulate proof of committed users.
  • Innovative monetisation models whereby the media pervasiveness and interactivity renders possible the ability to advertise seamlessly across mediums, through for instance, digital/ in-world banners & signage, contextual advertising, out-of-home, and mobile advertising etc.
  • Developing a commercial platforms and applications where businesses and consumers can carry out virtual – physical transactions where virtual and physical goods and games are distributed.

The objectives of the call are to:

  1. Promote innovative projects in R&D and commercialization
  2. Support Singapore developers to gain direct access to publishing and distribution channels to commercialize their applications on various digital platforms; and
  3. Groom local developers and platform providers to develop core competencies in the development, publishing and distribution of next generation Web services.

Funding Quantum

MDA will be committed to the following for SMEs and established companies:

  1. Repayable grant for commercialization projects
  2. Fund up to 50% of project costs for R&D projects
  3. Fund up to $50,000 for startups

The proposals are assessed and approved by an evaluation panel. The selected projects will then be further evaluated and approved by MDA. The initiative does not fund projects that are essentially installations, part of live performances, or exhibitions. Funding will also not be provided for the establishments of infrastructure, ongoing administrative costs of organizations, or the establishments of infrastructure, ongoing costs of an organisation’s or individual’s website. Funds will be allocated to each selected applicant upon approval of application.

Milestone and Deliverables

The deliverables at the end of the project should be a polished technology / application / service for deployment / distribution on various platforms.

Development is to commence no earlier than 1st February 2010 where milestones and deliverables will be determined by MDA and the partner(s).

Between milestone submissions, MDA and partners may organize demo/ feedback sessions where team members will be required to showcase and demonstrate work-in-progress builds for play-testing and feedback gathering. All assets (for example, source code and technology) and copyrights to the completed projects will belong to the applicants.

MDA reserve the right to use the projects including the content therein for non-commercial and publicity purposes. The MDA and partners will require due credits in the website and all promotional & publicity programmes / materials of the completed product as acknowledgement for the support and assistance rendered by the MDA and partners under the initiative.

Applicants are expected to undertake and complete the project upon official approval from panel review.

Applicants will be assessed based on the evidence of their ability and commitment to successfully manage and deliver the project. Candidates may be required to attend an interview, by invitation, which will take place after the closing date.

Selection will be made by a panel of representatives comprising MDA and partners. Successful applicants will receive an email reply jointly by MDA and the partners on the outcome of their applications within 6 weeks of the closing date or earlier.

NO QUESTIONS ON THE STATUS OF THE FUNDING APPLICATION WILL BE ENTERTAINED

Termination of Project

In the event that the applicant decides to terminate the project, the applicant would have to compensate MDA and the publishing partners by refunding the entire sum of funds which has been disbursed to applicants at the time of termination.
